Rediscovering the Chinese Countryside in the Age of Social Media
In recent years, facilitated by the rapid growth in mobile devices and social media, a growing army of videographers in rural China are turning views of China’s countryside life into short videos and generating tens of millions of domestic and international followers. These digital productions, despite a wide range of quality, all claim to reflect an “authentic” and “organic” countryside and attract viewers through a combination of unadorned rusticity, pastoral idyll and preindustrial charm. The explosion of such rural-based digital content has become one of the most eye-catching phenomena on the Chinese Internet. This talk will look into Chinese social media’s rediscovery and repackaging of the rural lifescape and examines the sociocultural dynamics behind the production, circulation, and consumption of these videos.
